YOUTH PROGRAMS
AYPAL's (Asian Pacific Islander Youth Promoting Advocacy and Leadership) mission is to change the relationship of power between youth and policy makers through direct action organizing campaigns and arts activism. AYPAL is also a safe place where youth can get together to talk about common issues, make new friends, learn about their culture and history and build community with conscious and caring adults. Past campaigns include getting ethnic studies in schools, fighting against deportation, and working for education reform. Past arts projects include martial arts, guerilla theater, dance, and open space for young people to explore our strong Pilipino history of resistance. Want to check out one of our weekly meetings? For more information about how to get involved call Roseli Ilano (510)465-9876 x310.

Pilipino Youth Coalition: Alameda County
Pilipino Youth Coalition began in 1996 when local high school and community college students felt there was a need for a Pilipino Youth organization in Union City. PYC is one of 4 P/FYCs in Northern California. Pilipino Youth Coalition, Alameda County, is a youth group where college, middle school, and high school youth develop their leadership skills, find support with each other, discuss current family and social issues, etc.

Regional Alliance for Community Empowerment
RACE is a youth community organizing team that works to make positive change in the Union City community for youth. RACE interns take the initiative in creating and implementing a community campaign addressing an important issue for youth. In the past RACE has worked to get a youth policy passed and a youth center in Union City. Currently, RACE is challenging the hat policy at Logan High School. RACE has been successful in developing youth community organizing and leadership skills.

BATA: Union City
The BATA Program is a self-esteem building project that focuses student attention away from drug use, violence and other non-constructive behavior to positive personal development through Filipino cultural grounding and positive self-image. Its purpose is to encourage realistic goals and choices through interactive educational workshops, group discussions, field trips and recreational activities. Students are encouraged to voice their own thoughts and feeling about issues that may affect their lives.

FAA is proud to offer BATA at three Union City schools: James Logan High School, Alvarado Middle School and Cesar Chavez Middle School.

BATA at Logan High School is also part of Voices, a Violence Prevention Collaboration.

BATA: Pinole
Building Adults Through Awareness at Pinole Valley High School is going strong into its 8th year. FAA's Reproductive Health Program for youth sponsored by The California Wellness Foundation and Kaiser Permanente serves over 300 youth annually. Our free services include parent and teacher approved pull out sessions, afterschool support groups and activities such as hosting our youth run open mic night "The Rhythm Room," our Kuya/Ate peer mentorship program for incoming freshmen, as well as an annual youth culture and health conference, "Mission Possible." Youth peer educator interns and volunteers are trained in health issues such as birth control, sexually transmitted infections, HIV 101, and various other issues that affect at risk teens.

Through an understanding of self, community and social justice, BATA strives to empower youth to make healthy decisions and provides the tools for constructive behavioral change
